New California School Dashboard Goes Beyond Test Scores

MUSD believes in “Making a positive difference to each and every student daily.” This statement was adopted by our school board as “WHY” we are in public education.  The new California School Dashboard provides every district a quick snapshot on how we are doing in making a positive difference for ALL our children.  We look forward to utilizing this new tool in our daily efforts to make positive change for the children in Manteca Unified.

–Roger Goatcher, Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services

Manteca Unified School District parents and educators now have a new way to learn about the performance of our schools and district that goes far beyond what was previously available.  The California Department of Education is unveiling a landmark accountability and improvement system called the California School Dashboard.  The Dashboard provides easy-to-read information to help parents, educators, and the community evaluate school and district performance, identify strengths and weaknesses, and provide targeted assistance when needed.

The new Dashboard website uses multiple indicators to give a more complete impression of how schools are performing over time, including high school graduation rates, English Learner progress, suspension rates, and state testing scores in English/Language Arts and Math.  Color-coded displays show both current performance and change over time.  The Dashboard replaces an old accountability system that primarily used state test scores to evaluate performance.

The new Dashboard is a work in progress, but the public can preview a field test of the Dashboard beginning this week with more complete implementation during the 2017-18 school year.

The Dashboard is a key step in a series of major shifts in public education in California that have raised the bar for student learning, transformed testing, increased transparency, and placed the focus on equity for all students.  As part of our continuing Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) development cycle, MUSD has been using similar data to identify areas of need and continuous improvement for all students.  The district will continue in that process, with the addition of the new Dashboard data, to set goals and funding priorities for the next school year.
