Manteca Unified Brings Opera to Students

Manteca Unified recently transported students into the enchanting world of opera with a captivating performance of Hansel and Gretel. Hosted by the District's Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Department, the Opera Modesto performance introduced professional opera and orchestral performers to second and third-grade students from Great Valley, Mossdale, Lincoln, Nile Garden, Lathrop, and George McParland Elementary Schools.

The performance was met with thunderous applause, cheers, and enthusiastic calls of “Bravo!” as students experienced the grandeur of live opera, many for the very first time. “It was amazing to see their faces light up,” shared Anthony Dahl, VAPA Coordinator. “For some students, this was their first exposure to professional performing arts.”

Beyond the performance, the MUSD VAPA Department ensured the experience extended into the classroom. Educators were provided with a cross-curricular instructional guide designed to align the opera experience with state learning standards in English Language Arts, Art, and even Science. Teachers can now weave the story of Hansel and Gretel into lessons that enhance students’ comprehension, creativity, and critical thinking.

The event also served as a source of inspiration for the elementary audience. Following the performance, the professional singers and musicians shared their personal journeys into the arts, reflecting on their own lives in elementary school. This provided students with relatable stories and sparked curiosity about participating in their school choir or other performing arts programs.

Older students from Weston Ranch High School's (WRHS) performing arts program also benefited from the visiting professionals. They had the chance to work alongside the cast and crew, gaining valuable insight into the dedication and teamwork required to stage a professional production.

“Getting to talk directly with professionals opened their eyes to what’s possible,” shared Ethan Albala, WRHS Performing Arts department chair. “The first-hand experience, learning how to prepare for auditions and music school, made them feel like a future in the performing arts is within reach.”

Experiences like these reflect Manteca Unified's ongoing commitment to providing students with meaningful opportunities to explore their interests and see pathways to college and career readiness. By engaging with professionals and immersing themselves in the arts, students are encouraged to dream big and envision their futures in creative fields.
