The Joy of Learning

Enhancing TK and Kindergarten Instruction with Standards-Based Strategies

“Children are FULL of thoughts and ideas! The more you show interest in their thoughts, the more excited they will be to share them,” shared teacher Tsehai Russell.

Did you know Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten have their own set of California state learning standards?

Earlier this week, MUSD hosted a districtwide professional development day, where teachers from every grade level explored new tools and strategies to enhance their teaching of these essential standards.

In the TK and Kindergarten sessions, teachers focused on specific learning standards and discovered creative ways to combine joyful play with meaningful learning. For instance, did you know that identifying primary shapes is an actual California state learning standard? In the math training, teachers read a book about shapes and explored engaging activities to help students master this concept to meet math standards.

In an integrated session, teachers discussed innovative ways to gather evidence of how students are progressing toward proficiency or fully understanding a learning standard while teaching another subject. For example, a teacher can work on a science worksheet with their class while also gathering evidence for a child’s ability to put together a complete sentence, which would be a language arts standard.

In Manteca Unified, the curriculum in TK is aligned through third grade, which means that students who participate in TK begin learning key grade-level standards at just 4 years old, building a solid foundation for long-term academic success. Visit www.mantecausd.net/TK to pre-enroll today.
